Tiling - What Qualifications do I Need?

To become a tiler you do not need any formal qualifications.
However you are unlikely to get any work nowadays without having a recognized qualification such as a NVQ in tiling. This qualification is recognized as the industry standard and will allow you to apply for jobs as a tiler or show yourself to be competent if you are self employed.

The City & Guilds Wall & Floor Tiling course will train you up to the required standard to be able to pass the NVQ assessment.

Basic Level of requirements to become a Tiler:

  • City & Guilds Wall & Floor Tiling

  • NVQ level 2 Wall & Floor Tiling

You do not need any previous experience or qualifications to start on a course, all you need is enthusiasm and a eagerness to learn your chosen trade.

Intensive Tiling Courses

You will learn everything you will need to enter the workplace as a fully qualified tiler including:

  • Preparation of background surfaces
  • Choosing correct types of adhesives, grouts and tiles
  • Special tiling (mosaics etc)
  • Sealing edging and trims
  • Positioning & Fixing
  • Cutting of Tiles
  • Cutting holes in tiles
  • Grouting + cleaning
  • Repairing
  • Difficult areas
  • Under floor Heating
  • How to quote
  • Planning and estimation of jobs (including calculation of required materials)

You gain the NVQ in Tiling when you are assess by a city & guilds examiner, who will observe your work and judge if you are up to the required standard.

By the time you have completed your intensive tiling course you should be more than capable of passing this examination.

Tiler's can earn:

  • Starting around £12,000 - £16,000 per year

  • Up to £24,000 per year
    or more with qualifications & experience

Hours Worked

  • up to 39 per week Monday to Friday

You may be required to work overtime at weekends and evenings in order to meet a construction deadline.

If you are a self employed tiler the more you work the more you can make.

Tiling can be physical demanding, you will travel from job to job and may have to stay from home on a long contract.
